NEXT MaUsE Members' Meeting - March 26th, 2008

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on March 14, 2008

    ‘A’ is for ‘A‘pple – ‘M’ is for ‘M‘ac
‘G’ is for ‘G‘oogle from whence cometh ‘G‘mail
    March 26th is the club’s ‘G’ day!

This month at our March 26th meeting we have two Great presentations both based on Good things that you can do using Google’s Goodies. As usual we will meet at the Whitby Central Library6.30 p.m. for early-birds or 7.00 p.m. for the main meeting.

    ‘Presentation # 1‘ Features Guy Lafontaine . . .
    ‘Getting a G-Mail / Google account’ &
‘Creating a Special Map to Share’

A couple of meetings back Guy tantalized us with a brief peek at some of the mapping abilities of Google Maps. This month Guy will explain additional benefits when you possess a Google Account. He show how to get your own account (free). You can then use Google mapping features tailored to your personal needs. This includes sending a link to people which when clicked on, will display your annotated map of your choosing. Google maps include Google’s ability to use satellite imaging that will show views from space which include zooming features.

    ‘Presentation # 2’ Features Aaron Vegh . . .
    ‘Spam Filtering Using ‘G‘mail‘
    Our second ‘must see’ presentation.

Aaron, in his excellent iPhone editorial in this month’s ‘DoubleClick,’ includes information on eliminating almost all e-mail spam by using the filtering abilities of your Gmail account. Aaron will demonstrate for all of us how, using one of Gmail’s built in features, you can do just that; you will agree that is a Great thing for you to be able to do! And, yes! It really does work and it is well worth the small amount of time and effort to set it up.

    AND MORE . . .
The March 26th program will include the usual informational segments and the ever popular ‘You got questions – We got answers’; if you would like to discuss a personal computing problem ‘one-on-one‘ with one of the club’s resource people; come early – 6.30 p.m. – if it‘s a problem with your laptop computer, please bring your computer with you.

    PLEASE NOTE . . .
A reminder to you that, if you have not already done so, go now to www.mause.ca and download this moth’s DoubleClick newsletter.

John Kettle, the club’s treasurer, suggests that, if you are renewing your membership this month, you can save paper and postage and bring your membership renewal cheque with you to the meeting. (John asks ‘cheques please,’ cheques make life easier for him as they show the name of the person who is renewing their membership, whereas, dollar bills, pretty though they may be, are anonymous and John has to remember who gave him the money, not always easy to do if a number of people pay in cash on the same evening).

Looking forward to having the pleasure of your presence at our March 26th MaUsE meeting.

On behalf of YOUR club’s executive committee,
    Stan Wild, Secretary

February 27th MaUsE Meeting - Join Us

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on February 14, 2008

Time to mark your calendar for the February 27th MAcintosh USers East members' meeting at Whitby Central Library starting at 7:00 p.m.

We have a great meeting planned for you with very diverse but interesting feature presentations:

    1. Catalog, browse, and share all your books, movies, music, and video games with 'Delicious Library.' You will need your Mac, a webcam, and the Delicious Library program. Just point any FireWire digital video camera, like an Apple iSight®, at the barcode on the back of any book, movie, music, or video game; Delicious Library does the rest – rediscover your home library!
    2. 'iPhoto Refresher,' Using digital cameras for photography seems to be the norm for every day use these days, and iPhoto is the Mac program that allows you to download, capture, store and edit the photos that you take; but, are you using the full potential of iPhoto? Aaron will be refreshing our memories on how to use all of the features of this valuable program.
    3. And yes we will have all of the regular features; Mac Tip Of The Month – Apple News – Questions and Answers – and of course our monthly raffle for some interesting Mac related items and programs.
    4. Reminder: If you have not already done so, now would be a good time to download the February edition of DoubleClick, the club's excellent newsletter; go to www.mause.ca and select the latest issue from the newsletter menu.

Looking forward to seeing you on February 27th.

    January 23 Meeting Followup!

Posted by Aaron Vegh on January 24, 2008

We hope you enjoyed last night's public MaUsE meeting. It was well-attended, as usual! Also, as usual, we are happy to follow up with some information that was imparted during the meeting. For you exploration, discover, or just plain fun, here's some links to get busy with:
    • Multiple Sites in iWeb: If you want to create more than one site in iWeb, Check this out. Also, take a look at this freeware package, called iWebSites.
    • Backup solutions, always a popular topic, and for good reason! I've always favoured SuperDuper!, which clones your drive to an external HD. Time Machine makes incremental backups to save your files on an hourly basis. Time Machine CAN help you recover from a system failure, but it's much more time-consuming and labour-intensive.
    • Accounting Software: we saw a couple options for business accounting packages. Stan reviewed FinanceToGo in this month's DoubleClick, and the general advice is to steer clear of Intuit's QuickBooks for Mac. I've used it myself, however, and didn't hate it. Of course, if you're a business, you should never replace a good accountant with a piece of software...
    • When to Buy a New Mac? The question was asked about when we'll see a new MacBook Pro. "Soon", of course. The MacRumors Buyers Guide is a great tool for determining when you should make a purchase, as it measures Apple's product cycles.
    • iSight Turnaround: Someone asked about getting the iSight to see what's behind the computer. There are a few mirror-based products that do this. This one gets a top hit from Google.
    • Converting Analogue to Digital Video: Chris mentioned some services that do this kind of conversion. Member Marc Campeau tipped me off to these guys in Toronto who do it for about 12 cents a foot.
    • Terminal Tricks! And there are many. Here are some resources to get you started. Enjoy!
    Next Meeting: February 27, 2008!
    See you there.

January 23, 2008 - MaUsE Regular Monthly Meeting

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on January 17, 2008

Our thanks to all of you who came to our 'Evening With Mac' on Wednesday evening; it was fun. A very good evening; it is always a pleasure to spend time with fellow MaUsE members. Also, our thanks to Michael, Aaron, Chris, Bruce, Bruce, Guy, Marcel and Joe for sharing their Mac knowledge with all of us.

This month you get a second opportunity to spend time with your fellow Mac aficionados, our regular monthly meeting is just a few days hence –

Wednesday next, January 23rd, 7.00 p.m. at the Whitby Central Library; here's what we have planned for you.

For early birds, from 6.15 to 6.45 p.m., prior to the meeting's start,  an opportunity to talk one-on-one with some of our more knowledgeable members about your personal computing questions.
The regular meeting will start promptly at 7.00 p.m. (give or take a minute or three) with Aaron doing the honors.

    Topics include:

'Web Site Delight' – Google Surprise - Guy Lafontaine.

Lots and lots of news from Apple, a round-up of news from Macworld in San Francisco, all presented in his own special style by Aaron Vegh.

Question and Answer Session; your monthly opportunity to find the answer to that question about an application that you don't fully understand.

Michael Shaw will take centre stage and tell you about the many great prizes that you could win in this month's raffle; the executive, at their meeting, were given a preview of what's being given away and I can assure you that all of the prizes are good Mac applications, many worth hundred of dollars if you were to go out and buy them.

At the mid evening break there will be time for you to get a coffee and socialize for 15 minutes.

How to Transfer Film to Digital Video - Chris Greaves will demonstrate – A good opportunity to lean how you can both preserve and share treasured film on CDs.

'Inside every Mac there is a 'Terminal' – What is it and what does it do? Aaron will demonstrate how your terminal works; the many useful functions it performs, and how, when using your Mac  you can use it your advantage.

To close out the evening - The Raffle – You must be present if you wish to win one of those great prizes.

It's a great line up, an evening that will send you home happy that you have spent another excellent evening in the company of your fellow Mac users.  The club's executive  are looking forward to seeing and spending time with you at ...

Whitby Public Library, Wednesday January 23rd, 7:00 p.m.

    See you there!

    Stan Wild
    Club Secretary.

    Meeting Followup! For November 28th

Posted by Aaron Vegh on November 29, 2007

We had "the best meeting of the year" last night! Naw, it was the best meeting EVAH! Thanks for coming out and being a part of it. Clearly, the enthusiasm of our membership is directly proportional to its size, and this meeting was no exception: great attention, lots of questions, and a good time had by all! Here are some links and info that came up in the meeting, for your education and entertainment:
    • Changing Text Size in Safari: Quickly, you can hit Command-+ to increase font size and Command-- to decrease it. You can also add a set of widgets to your toolbar by right-clicking on your toolbar in Safari, selecting "Customize Toolbar..." and dragging the set of "A"s to the toolbar.
    • Looking for a hard drive?: Future Shop did sell the 500GB external drive that I had at the meeting for $119 -- but now it's back up to $140. Still, check it out, as it's a great accessory to have connected to your Mac.
    • Taking a screenshot? Then here's a definitive menu of commands that make it really easy, thanks to the MacRumors guides.
    • Craigslist is the best free classifieds online, and the Toronto listing is the closest to us: lots of great things to see and do here!
    • Of course, eBay remains the number one garage sale site on the 'Net, so don't be afraid to check it out for your Christmas shopping!
    • And what would this edition be without mention of Leopard? LEOPARD! Makes teeth brighter, grass greener, food tastier! It's awesome. Check out the product page with general info, but better yet, watch the guided tour video!

Next Meeting: Evening with Mac! January 16th @ 7pm!

    Next Regular Meeting: January 23rd @ 7pm!

MaUsE Swap Meet - Trash or Treasure? Your trash may be someone else’s 'Treasure'

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on November 5, 2007

The club’s annual swap meet will take place in conjunction with our November 28th members meeting at the Main Whitby Library in meeting room one. Most everyone has some piece of equipment or a software program that is still in perfect operating condition, but which they no longer use or require. Here is your once a year chance to dispose of those treasurers. At one of our meetings you might even have won a software program that you cannot personally use; here’s a good opportunity to pass it on to another member who can use it...

The swap meet rules are simple:
    • Bring any no longer needed or surplus piece of Mac equipment or software program and simply ‘swap it’ to another member, or, give it away.
    • Set up will be at 6:15 p.m. at the back of the meeting room and swapping will continue until 5 minutes before the regular meeting start time of 7:00 p.m.!
    • The swap may be for an item on offer by another member, or, a few pennies may change hands, or, as stated, you may simply give it away and do another member a favour.
    • And yes, if there are any items still available after the meeting has started you can still make a deal during the coffee break.
Please note, if you bring an item to the meeting and you are unable to find a new home for it, you are responsible for taking that item back home with you.

    Guy and Stan

    Post-Meeting Followup

Posted by Aaron Vegh on October 25, 2007

We had a great turnout at last night's meeting! Our worthy secretary, Stan Wild, reported over 50 folks in attendance. We couldn't be more pleased to see several new faces as well. These are signs of the user group's increased relevance, and of course, a sign of Apple's health in general.

Following on with the meeting last night, there were quite a few links that people wanted to have on-hand for further research. Without further ado, here are the links that we discussed at the meeting:

    • Instructables.com, DIY Life and Make, three sites that provide instructions for creating just about anything -- safe and brutally lethal. Remember kids: with great power comes great responsibility. Use it wisely.
    • For support issues, there's always the Topica list (send a message to mause@mac.com to get subscribed!). But the real answers are at Apple Discussions, where an extremely vibrant and passionate support community resides. When I don't have an answer, this is my first stop. The old Command-? never hurt either.
    • Enable Safari's Debug menu: it requires a tiny bit of Terminal skullduggery, but once done, you'll be able to change your user agent, activate a Javascript console (for you, Penny!), and much much more.
    • The question was asked at the meeting: should we upgrade to Leopard? Watch Apple's Guided Tour video, and you won't need to ask that kind of question. (the answer is YES!)
    • Guy LaFontaine did a great presentation on iFamily for Tiger and pointed out a few more sites for genealogy wonks: Cyndislist.com, the Ontario Genealogical Society, and Ancestry.com. Go gettum.

Next Meeting: November 28 @ 7pm! We'll be discussing the new Leopard Operating System, and much, much more. See you then!

    OCTOBER Meeting

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on October 13, 2007

The next MaUsE meeting will be held, 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 24th at Whitby Public Library.

We have another full evening of interesting programs lined up for your enjoyment, in addition to all of the usual good things, and, in answer to a number of requests one of this month‘s feature presentations will be looking at genealogy programs and resources.

    6:15 to 6:45 p.m.

    • MacKNOWLEDGE FOR EARLY BIRDS! Our BONUS session Q & A session with some of MaUsE’s resource people. The extra session uses a computer at the back of the meeting room for those of you who would like to arrive early and get an extra serving of MacKnowledge.
    • Pre meeting and coffee break – Extra attraction - Down Memory Lane Chris Greaves, the club’s first President, will set up an original Apple II computer at the rear of the meeting room and give some demonstrations of how computers looked and worked when the club was first founded.

Our meeting will feature two great presentations:

1, “iFamily for Tiger” – Guy Lafontaine will demonstrate a new genealogical program (see his write up in August’s DoubleClicK) and talk about some of the many genealogical resources available for people who are researching their ancestors.

    2. “iLife ‘08” – Aaron Vegh will provde an overview of iLife ’08, a major update to Apple's award-winning suite of digital lifestyle applications. Apple delivers significant upgrades to iPhoto, iWeb, GarageBand and iDVD, plus a completely reinvented iMovie that offers a revolutionary new way to enjoy, edit and share your video.

A NEW Special Feature special ‘Viewpoint’, from Aaron.
In recent months Apple, now so much more than just a computer company, has made a number of marketing decisions that may eventually change the way that they do business; Aaron will take a look at the effect that some of those decisions may have for us, ‘the Mac aficionados‘ and the computing world at large, and, he will invite your comments on what you believe those changes will mean to you.

    Meeting Followup - September 26

Posted by Aaron Vegh on September 27, 2007

We hope you enjoyed last night's MaUsE Public Meeting! We had great turnout, and the topics appeared to be well-received. For your education and elucidation, here are some links to information that we discussed at the meeting.
    • Marcel did a great talk on news aggregators, or "feed readers". The two big ones for the Mac are NetNewsWire (a commercial application which makes a free "Lite" version available -- scroll down the page to find it) and the open source (free) Vienna. Both work similarly, but NNW is considered the superior application.
    • One question came up about virtual desktops on the Mac. There is a system add-on that does this right now called VirtueDesktops, but by far the slickest implementation will come from Apple's Leopard, due out next month. This is a video of Leopard's Spaces in action.
    • Speaking of Leopard, we had questions about whether it's worth upgrading. Apple's Leopard overview provides a number of videos demonstrating the new features of OS X 10.5. There's some funky stuff in there (Time Machine and Mail's improvements look really compelling), but the decision is always around what features you think you'll use. What's important to note though, is that OS X is now a mature platform: there's nothing critical that will make your Mac work better, just cooler. :-)
    • Finally, there was discussion of iWork '08, Apple's newest office suite. You can see demo videos of different features in Pages, Keynote, and Numbers. Or, if you want to go free, the best open source alternative is NeoOffice, a Mac port of the OpenOffice suite. It ain't as pretty, but it works well.
Our next meeting is Wednesday, October 24 at 7pm. We'll be talking about the new iLife suite, among many other things (including, I hope hope hope, a Canadian iPhone launch!). See you then.

    Next Meeting: June 27th,2007

Posted by Guy Lafontaine on June 15, 2007

Just two weeks until the next MaUsE meeting,
7:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 27th at Whitby Public Library.
As usual we have a grand program lined up for your enjoyment with lots of useful information that you can take home and put into practice.

    There are TWO feature presentations.

    1. SPOTLIGHT
How to instantly find anything, anywhere on your computer, anytime. Spotlight blazes through your files and applications, then displays the results nearly as fast as you can type.

    2. BLUETOOTH
You probably use it in some way every day. It is the technology that enables various electronic devices (computers, mobile phones, PDAs, digital cameras, etc.) to communicate with each other wirelessly. We'll tell you how you can use it with even greater effect. Note for trivia buffs. Bluetooth was named by Erikson (its inventor) in honor of Harald 'Bluetooth' Gormson, tenth century Danish King. Why him? Because the Bluetooth protocol allows diverse technologies to work in unison and King Harold united two countries, Denmark and Norway. By the way, King Harald was the Grandfather of England's King Canute. TYMWTK!

Plus we have our regular features that you enjoy each month:

    • Apple News, and there is plenty of it!
    • Web Site Delights; useful sites that you can visit and enjoy.
    • You have questions? We have answers! Our monthly Q & A Session.
    • Our monthly raffle. Make a point of checking out page 25 of this month's DoubleClick Newsletter to see a preview of many of the great items that will be giving away to members this month.

    NEW, BEGINNING THIS MONTH
    MacKNOWLEDGE FOR EARLY BIRDS!
This is a new BONUS session from 6:15 to 6:45 p.m. We will have an open Q & A extra session, this month with Past President Chris Greaves. These extra sessions will use a computer at the back of the meeting room where those of you who would like to arrive early and get an extra serving of MacKnowledge can spend time to increase your knowledge about your Mac's operation and use.
Different guru(s) each month. Questions answered with aid of demo computer(s).
Will you be an 'Early Bird?'

June's DoubleClick, our club newsletter is now available for downloading from the club's website.
Make sure you check it out. Great Mac information for you.
    Get IT.

Looking forward to seeing YOU at our meeting on June27th at Whitby Public Library.

"An Evening With Mac": April 4th Special Session for New Users

Posted by Aaron Vegh on March 21, 2007

MaUsE will be hosting a special 'bonus' meeting at which our clubs knowledge mavens will be present to help you resolve any problems that you may be having with your Mac, or to just plain explain how to make your Mac serve you even better.

    Here's what will happen:

In keeping with the club's 'open door' policy, the meeting will be open to MaUsE members and non-member Mac users alike.

A number of 'help desks' (with a working computers and staffed by a knowledgeable club member) each seating half a dozen people will be arranged around the perimeter of the meeting room.

It is anticipated that the majority of the club's crew of experts; Michael, Aaron, Bruce, Chris, Marcel and Guy, along with our latest and youngest addition to the crew, Joe Nicholson, will be on hand to share their many years of combined Mac knowledge with you.

During the evening members are invited to seek help and advice at those desks and to move freely from desk to desk, maven to maven, at appropriate intervals during the evening.

Members who may be experiencing usage issues with their own 'lap-top' Macs are encouraged to bring them to the meeting in order that help in resolving their performance issues can be offered.

This meeting is open to all members, not just 'Mac Newbies,' so mark your calendar and plan to join us for an interesting 'Evening With Mac;' and, if you are a member who is very knowledgeable about using Macs, we particularly invite you to come and spend the evening with us, to join the 'help crew,' and to share your knowledge with other members.

During the evening 'no charge,' light refreshments (soft drinks and TH donuts) will be available to members and guests attending the meeting.

If you need additional information about 'The Evening' please feel welcome to contact any of the club's executive, you can easily find out how to do so by checking our website at < www.mause.ca> and going to page two of the latest issue of DoubleClick, OR, you can speak to them in person at our March 28th members' meeting, OR, you can phone me directly at (905) 430-4562.

We will be looking forward to seeing YOU at both the regular club meeting in March, and at the 'Evening With Mac' on Wednesday, April 4th.

    Jim Foster Passes Away

Posted by Aaron Vegh on September 1, 2006

It's with great sadness that we report the passing of our President, Jim Foster. His long-lasting fight with cancer was well-known to our members, but that fight ended on the morning of August 31.

There will be a visitation at 9am this morning, followed by a funeral service at 10, at the Courtice Funeral Home, 1587 Hwy #2, Courtice (corner of Sandringham and #2).

Our deepest sympathies go out to his wife Susan and the rest of his family. The world, and this club in particular, just wont' be the same without him.

Want to Attend SIG Meeting But Not a Member???

Posted by Jim Foster on July 6, 2006

By the way, if you are not yet a member of Macintosh Users East but would like to attend one of its SIG meetings, such as the Photoshop SIG meeting described above, you CAN do so simply by completing a membership form and paying the annual MaUsE Membership dues of $45.00 before the meeting begins. The meeting room is generally open at least a half hour before the meeting begins, and you can see Penny Johnson or one of the other Coordinators to do this.

If you do not have a formal membership registration form, you can just provide a cheque for $45.00 along with your full name and mailing address, telephone number, and email address if you have one. Our membership Chairman, John Kettle, can then get back to you at a later date if additional info is required.

Note that, as a special incentive to join MaUsE, anyone who joins the club at one of our SIG meetings and pays their $45.00 annual membership dues, will have their first SIG meeting fee ($5.00) waived. Such new members will be asked to participate in such fees for any future SIG meetings they attend. If you have any questions, feel free to drop us an email at mause@mac.com.

    Photoshop SIG Meeting Review

Posted by Jim Foster on July 6, 2006

The Photoshop SIG held its regular second Wednesday of the month meeting at the Whitby Libray last Wednesday, July 12th, extending their season into the Summer. The next meeting of this SIG is scheduled for Wednesday, September 13th, 2006

SIG Coordinator Ken Jansen reports, "we held our most recent meeting last night with 8 members in attendance. Guy walked us through doing a panorama picture and we had a very interesting and helpful question & answer period. I think everybody enjoyed the night and got some new helpful tips." A new feature added to this month's SIG meeting was distribution of a CD-ROM containing resources pertinent to the subject, including four episodes of PhotoshopTV.

Thanks to Penny Johnson, Ken Jansen, and Valerie Davis for acting as Coordinators for the Photoshop SIG, as well as Aaron Vegh and Guy Lafontaine who have been acting as content experts on Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, respectively.

    Special Interest Group [SIG] Update

Posted by Jim Foster on June 29, 2006

Over the past months, MaUsE has worked with two groups of its members toward launching Special Interest Groups, one for Photoshop devotees and the other for folks interested in developing their own Internet web site.

The Photoshop SIG appears to be successfully launched. It will meet next at the Whitby Library, Mtg. Rm 2, at 7:00 PM, on Wednesday, July 12th. Any paid up MaUsE Member is welcome to attend. Participants are asked to provide a $5.00 contribution per meeting, to help cover the cost of the meeting room rental.

Efforts to get the Internet SIG off the ground have not proved successful, owing to the slightly smaller group of people expressing interest in such an activity. For this reason, the Internet SIG has been put "on the back burner" for the moment, pending any new ideas or initiatives by those interested in pursuing it.

    MaUsE Takes Summer Break

Posted by Jim Foster on June 28, 2006

Our June 28th regular meeting of MaUsE was very well received, with a record audience of about 45 people, the highest number we have had in quite a long time. Everyone seemed engaged by the presentations made by Jim Foster, Michael Shaw, and Aaron Vegh of the club, and especially by the update provided in the second half of the evening by Patrick Lee of Apple Canada. Patrick focused on the new MacBook portable computer as well as the iPhoto features in the latest iLife '06 package, and of course fielded a number of questions from the audience.

The club will now take a break, not meeting formally again until September when our meeting will fall on the usual fourth Wednesday of the month, which I believe is the 27th. More news about that meeting will be posted closer to the event date.

On behalf of the entire MaUsE Executive, I wish everyone a happy and safe summer season, and look forward to seeing everyone again in the Fall.

    MaUsE Membership Heading Upwards!!

Posted by Jim Foster on May 26, 2006

MaUsE Treasurer and Membership Chairman, John Kettle, reported at our May 24th regular meeting that the club now had a total of 57 Paidup Members, which was noted at that time as a very good number relative to the past year. What we have learned since that meeting is that 3 more of our 2005 Members renewed their memberships with us after John's report - better late than never.

This means that MaUsE really now has a total of 60 Paidup Members, a number which is higher than we have seen for several years and which takes into account the fact that a small number of our 2005 Members elected not to renew this year.

This is great news for the club, but let's not stop there. It is a big job to get the message out into the community that MaUsE even exists, let alone to identify and target people who are the most likely candidates to want to join the club. Jim Danabie and the rest of the MaUsE Executive spend much of their time attempting to do just this, but EVERY existing MaUsE Member can help by simply talking to your Mac oriented friends or work colleagues about the club. Make sure you pick up a flyer or brochure at our meetings, not for yourself but to have tucked away at home so you can easily give it to someone you meet who may be interested.

Let's see how high a membership number we can reach in the balance of the 2006 membership year. Thanks for YOUR efforts in this area.

Ten MaUsE members assembled at the Whitby Library on Wednesday, May 17th, to conduct the very first meeting of the new MaUsE Photoshop / Photoshop Elements Special Interest Group, or SIG.

The meeting was largely organizational in nature, providing everyone the opportunity to learn a bit about each other's hopes and expectations for the group and to make some logistical decisions about future meetings. For example, it was proposed that future SIG meetings try to be held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month and that these SIG meetings start at 7:00 PM rather than 7:30 PM.

Jim Foster is arranging for a private mail list just for the members of this SIG. Invitations to join the mail list have been sent out by email to all of the MaUsE Members who have earlier expressed an interest in this SIG. The mail list will provide a way for the group to interact on future meeting topics and to be kept abreast of next meeting details. If you would like to join this new SIG, just send an email to Jim Foster. More info about the SIG will appear in future issues of DoubleClick and at regular MaUsE meetings.

    April MaUsE Meeting Review

Posted by Jim Foster on April 28, 2006

I am very happy to report that I was able to "make an appearance" and to take in the April 26th MaUsE meeting, all from the comfort of my home, thanks to iChat AV and a little help from Bruce Cameron. Hopefully I will be sufficiently recovered from recent surgery to be back in attendance in May.

Check out the meeting photos here for a glimpse of the various activiites. Thanks to Jim Danabie and friends for the photos.

Thanks also to Guy Lafontaine, Irma Shaw, and Aaron Vegh for their presentations which added so much to the evening. Hope to see everyone again in May.

Mountain Comes to MaUsE in May

Posted by Jim Foster on April 28, 2006

Don't miss the next regular MaUsE Meeting on Wednesday, May 24th, 2006, as the mountain that is Microsoft comes to MaUsE. Our feature presentation will be on Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac, and the fine folks at the Microsoft Business Unit have even been gracious enough to provide a copy of the Professional Edition of Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac which we will offer as a raffle prize! The Professional Edition includes Virtual PC 7 along with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Entourage, etc., and has a value of several hundred dollars. Only paid up members of MaUsE will be eligible for the free raffle prize tickets, so be sure to come early in order to join or renew so YOU can be eligible for the draw!

Also on the agenda for the May meeting will be Stan Wild who has offered to provide an overview of Reunion 7, from the perspective of starting from scratch to lay out one's family history. Earlier genealogy sessions have been well received and we are all looking forward to Stan's presentation.

The meeting will also include the usual assortment of other features, hopefully fulfilling our goal of "something for everyone" regardless of your level of Macintosh experience. Look forward to seeing you in May.

TidBITS Releases the MacWorld Digital Photography Superguide

Posted by Jim Foster on March 31, 2006

The latest ebook from the Take Control folks is a bit different, and, in fact, it was instead created by Macworld Magazine. Because digital photography is such a huge topic, Macworld assembled a dream team of authors to contribute their years of knowledge to the 102-page "Macworld Digital Photography Superguide," a collection of the best of Macworld's digital photography coverage. In 21 detailed sections, they teach readers how to take great shots, make them even better with image-editing tools ranging from iPhoto to Adobe Photoshop, move them to paper, and protect them against mishap.

Complete with a gorgeous layout and full-color graphics, not to mention ebook goodness like bookmarks and hotlinks, we're sure you'll learn a lot from the "Macworld Digital Photography Superguide."

We'll have a copy of this new edition as a raffle prize at our April meeting, and you can check the Take Control ebooks web site for info on ordering your own copy. They are at http://www.takecontrolbooks.com , and there is a 15-page free sample you can download.

This April 1st, Remember Apple Computer, Inc.

Posted by Jim Foster on March 27, 2006

On January 10, Apple CEO Steve Jobs closed his presentation at Macworld San Francisco 2006 by asking those Apple employees in attendance to stand for a round of applause as well as acknowledging the company's upcoming 30th Anniversary on April 1, 2006.

"One last thing... you know, Apple was founded on April Fool's Day in 1976. We thought that was pretty funny at the time," Jobs explained, as he stood in front of an image of himself and fellow Apple founder Steve Wozniak." And what that means is that Apple will be thirty years old this April Fool's Day. And I don't know what we're going do for it, but since we may not see many of you before then, I just wanted to point it out. Thirty years, making the best personal computers in the world."

    March Meeting Review

Posted by Jim Foster on March 23, 2006

The March 22nd regular meeting was a great success. Jim Foster was on hand for his 57th birthday, showcasing his 'ThankyouSteve' T-shirt commemorating the 30-year anniversary of the incorporation of Apple Computer on April 1st, 1976.

Marcel Durfresne entertained us with his review of a favourite site, www.thinks.com. Aaron Vegh talked about OS X System Secrets, an OS X human interface utility called QuickSilver (download here), and economical ways to migrate to OS X. This was followed up by Michael Shaw who as usual totally threw away the Apple Rule Book and showed us how OS X can be installed on many Macintosh models which according to Apple do not support OS X "Poppycock!", says Michael.

Another fun MaUsE raffle closed off the evening. We actually closed a few minutes early for a change! See everyone next month. For more photos, click here.

    April Meeting To Highlight AppleWorks

Posted by Jim Foster on March 22, 2006

MaUsE Member Guy Lafontaine will showcase our next meeting on Wednesday, April 26th, 2006. Guy has many years of experience both using and training folks about AppleWorks, perhaps the Mac application which would be found on more Macintosh computers than any other single application.

If you have AppleWorks, or even the older ClarisWorks program, on your computer but are not sure that you are getting everything out of it that it offers, you NEED to be at the April meeting. More news on other facets of the April meeting will be posted here as they become available.

    CDTExpo Rescheduled

Posted by Jim Foster on March 20, 2006

News this morning that the CDTExpo event, originally scheduled to be held at the Durham College/UOIT campus on March 31st-April 1st of this year has been postponed due to the current college strike and will now be held November 3rd & 4th.

The MaUsE Executive had been hoping to find a way that our club might be able to participate in the CDTExpo; the extra time now before the event happens should if anything help us to achieve this aim.

Mar. 9th PC Users Meeting Features MaUsE

Posted by Jim Foster on March 4, 2006

As advertised previously, Aaron Vegh and Chris Greaves represented MaUsE last week as special guest presenters at the Durham PC Users' Club meeting in Courtice. They took along the MaUsE Mac Mini and showed how well it integrates with a PC owner's existing peripherals. Aaron then showed off iChat AV, participating in a four-way video session which was actually hosted by MaUsE Member Hugh Amos from his home in Ajax. In addition to showing the video chatting capability between Hugh and Aaron, they also brought in Jim Foster from his home in Solina, AND Apple User Group Advisory Board member Rick Ortiz, all the way from Hawaii.

The 'Mac session' finished up with Aaron providing the PC audience with a review of the features of iLife '06.

Aaron/Chris report that at least one audience member must have been distracted at the outset of their presentation, leading to their question during the final Q & A session, "So, WHERE is the actual computer?"!!

    February MaUsE Meeting Report

Posted by Jim Foster on February 24, 2006

Wednesday's meeting was another success. Our "attendance elves" report that we had 35 people out to the Whitby Library for the meeting. We had probably a record number of different people involved in the evening's program. The meeting began, as usual, with President Jim Foster covering the Welcome, Intro, and Club Business.

John Kettle let us know that the club membership is now at 57 members and that we have a healthy bank balance, also that membership renewal time is rapidly approaching. For most members, renewals will be due in March and the cost to renew your membership will be $45.00. In this connection, a hand out was provided summarizing all the benefits available to MaUsE members which are not available to members of the general public.

Jim featured two web sites which he thought might be of interest to club members namely

    http://www.apple-history.com/ and http://www.atomiclearning.com/.

Michael Shaw made an impassioned plea on behalf of the older software, hardware, and accessories which lie in the dark recesses of all our office closets, suggesting that Members bring them out to the March meeting "swap" meet with proceeds going to the Club Treasury.

Irma Shaw then gave a brilliant overview of the "Enhancer" plugin software from Akvis Software, displaying how it has helped improve the quality of a number of her photographs from the trip which she and Michael had recently taken to Italy.

Aaron Vegh was our "featured speaker" of the evening, providing us with both a tour of the soon-to-be-released new MaUsE web site as well as continuing his talk on Creating Your Own Web Site by taking quite a bit of mystery out of the topic of HTML coding. A LOT of people seemed anxious to go home and try their hand at modifying an existing web page by editing its HTML code.

For those wishing to learn more about writing HTML, take a look at these links:

Stan Wild wrapped up the evening by asking any Members interested in participating in a Special Interest Groups devoted to Photoshop (or digital image processing generally) or to Internet Site Creation to contact him. Stan will collect the names and report back later on the level of interest shown and what the next steps may be.

Although time was tight, we did squeeze in a short raffle to conclude the evening.

    MaUsE Members "Eye" 3D Demo

Posted by Aaron Vegh on February 10, 2006

The MaUsE crowd was entertained by Chris Greaves at the Jan. 25th meeting. Chris provided several examples of how 3D imaging can work on a Macintosh and promised that the 3D world will be expanding even further in the area of games.

Aaron Vegh also whetted everyone's appetite by providing an informative if all too short introduction to the topic of creating one's own web site. Aaron had managed to get his hands on the brand new iWeb application from Apple and gave us a nice overview of its features. We've had a number of requests to continue this line of presentations so watch for more at future meetings.

Jim Foster also presented a movie he had created which summarized the highlights of his recent trip to Macworld Expo in San Francisco, plus he reviewed the Macworld 'Best of Show' awards.

John Kettle reported that membership continues to grow and the bank account is healthy. A great way to enter the 2006 calendar year!

Apple Plans 2nd Retail Store for Canada

Posted by Aaron Vegh on February 10, 2006

    Check out the following url.

if you would like to apply for a position at the newest Apple Retail Store in Canada. Unlike my predictions that Apple would next put a store in Montreal or Vancouver, the 2nd and 3rd largest cities in Canada, respectively, it appears that Apple feels there is still room for growth right in Toronto and is moving toward a second Toronto outlet located in the Eaton Center.
